Trim Video

Cut a video down to the part you want to keep, in your browser and without uploading the file.

Choose a video

or drop it here

The video is processed on this device and never uploaded.

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, TS / MTS / M2TS or VOB / MPG

Files over 1 GB can be slow. Very large outputs need a browser that can save straight to a file.

How it works

Choose a video, drag the two handles (or type the start and end in seconds), pick a mode and press Trim video. The video is read and written by your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Fast copies the compressed video and audio as they are. A video can only be cut cleanly at a keyframe (a full picture, often one every 2 to 10 seconds), so the cut moves out to the nearest keyframes and the file can include a little from before your start and after your end. Exact decodes and re-encodes the range, so it starts and ends where you chose.

After the trim, the page measures the file it made and shows its real duration next to the range you asked for.

Supported files

Inputs
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV work best. Other files the converter accepts can be trimmed in Exact mode.
Outputs
Fast mode keeps the input format and the original video and audio. Exact mode writes MP4 (H.264 and AAC) or WebM (VP9 and Opus).

Limitations

  • Fast mode is not a privacy cut. It can keep up to a few seconds outside the range you chose, and some players will show them. To share a clip without what comes before or after it, use Exact mode.
  • Exact mode re-encodes, so it is slower and loses a little quality. It keeps the main audio track only and drops subtitle tracks.
  • Trimming makes a new file. Your original video is not changed or deleted.
  • Very large outputs need a browser that can save straight to a file (desktop Chrome or Edge).

Questions

Why is my fast trim longer than the range I chose?

Fast mode copies the video without re-encoding, and copied video can only start on a keyframe. The tool keeps everything from the keyframe at or before your start, and may run on to the next keyframe after your end. The result shows the real length.

Which mode should I use?

Use Fast when you just want a shorter file and a second or two either side does not matter. Use Exact when the cut must be precise, or when what comes before or after must not be in the file.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed by your browser on your device and never leaves it.

Does trimming lose quality?

Fast mode is lossless because the video and audio are copied as they are. Exact mode re-encodes at high quality, which loses a little detail.

Example

A 2-minute phone clip has a keyframe every 2 seconds. Keeping 0:41.5 to 1:05.0 in Fast mode gives a file that starts at the keyframe at 0:40.0, so it is about 25 seconds long instead of 23.5 and opens with 1.5 seconds you meant to cut. In Exact mode the same range gives a 23.5-second file that starts at 0:41.5.
